Al Mouj Muscat is Oman’s leading lifestyle and leisure destination, a waterfront community that is the recipient of several awards. Residents and tourists love going to Al Mouj to swim, play, eat and just spend time with loved ones, with a myriad of experiences that the luxury destination offers.
The latest addition to this exhilarating destination is a skate park- the very first one in Oman!
Skateboarding- the journey from a mode of transport to a cult movement
In the post-war USA in the 1940s, surfboard owners decided to take surfing to the streets. Sounds bizarre right? They thought of something that would revolutionise action sports forever. However, the initial thought behind a surfboard on wheels was just to make movement easy.
By the ’60s “the surfboard on wheels” had a name – Skateboards and “sidewalk surfing” would be called “skateboarding”.
Skateparks -Every sport requires the perfect surface to be played on.
The first skatepark with concrete ramps opened for business in Arizona in 1965. The following year, revolutionising skateparks forever, plywood ramps were introduced in Washington, USA. The ’70s also saw the first world championship for skating and the 80’s made the sport global with the introduction of skating-related videos games. Skateboarding was no longer an activity that was shunned upon, but it had rather become an art form.
In the early 2000’s “Tony Hawks pro skater” was a game that caught the eye of every kid in the USA. This video game slowly became a craze all over the world. People who had never skated even once in their lives started loving this sport.
From the USA, skateboarding has traveled all over the world from North America to South East Asia in Taiwan, there are many countries where skateparks have been set up for the skaters and BMX bikers.
We at Sports Supply Co. have made ourselves a part of the skating community by collaborating with American Ramp Company (ARC) to give Muscat its first Modular skatepark at Al Mouj, Muscat.
OMAN’s 1st MODULAR SKATEPARK
The project aims at providing the community with the world’s best skatepark.
The above ground skatepark is the ARC’s X-series skatepark which has a phenolic ramp armour surface and is equipped with galvanised steel balusters.
A complete 3D rendering of the facility was done in order to give an exact idea to the customer so that they know what to expect.
At Sports Supply Co., we believe in predictability.
Special equipment designed by pro skaters called as the Pro- Ops have been installed for skaters to experience the best and help them invent and create their own trick and flips.
Pro-ops – Designed by the best, for the best…
SOFA – The signature of pro skater Shaun Hover is an obstacle that any skater at any level can skate on.
As Shaun is quoted saying “ My favorite obstacle is the Couch or the skate-couch. Anybody at any level can skate it because you can skate the bottom part like a box or you can skate it like a manual pad and for the more advanced skaters you can skate the top bar and grind the top edge. There are so many ways to skate this. Every skater is going to be hyped on it.”
SNAP-
It is a board inclined on a wall at first glance. However, this iconic addition can be used to perform a number of tricks, Pro skaters take it to the next level by grinding it on the top edge and combine it with wall rides or foot slants. This pro op is pro skater Dan Macfarlane’s signature.
OLD SKOOL BENCH– Another one of Dan’s signatures, the old stool skateboard bench resembles the old skull skateboard with a flat nose and can be placed in any skatepark to encourage a number of people to watch as it can be also used as a bench just to sit on. This pro op has the perfect design for any skater to try his tricks on and the end is also perfectly transitioned for the unique experience of launching out of the slides or grinds.
BRINGING ASIA ONE STEP CLOSER TO SKATEBOARDING-
With this modular skatepark in Muscat, we aim to bring the sport a lot closer to South Asia and would like to be pioneers in developing skateboarding in our country as well.
With the addition of skateboarding in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the sport is only going to grow in our part of the world. The dream to see kick-flips, the 360 flips and loads of other tricks all around the world and in India, we keep striving hard to give the world the best of skateboarding.
